A Simple Tutorial for Wild Bird Feeding
Winter Feeding When you start feeding birds during the fall it is desirable to continue throughout the winter. Birds may become stressed during really severe winter weather, especially when ice or snow covers their natural food. If you suddenly stop feeding under these conditions, birds may be exposed to unnecessary hardship. Offered in proper feeders, Blue Seal Wild Bird mixes will attract the following birds:

Other birds such as blue jays, grackles, starlings, and pheasant also eat Blue Seal Wild Bird mixes. In order to keep them off your feeder, scatter a good supply of scratch feed or coarse cracked corn on the ground and it should keep them away. This applies to squirrels and chipmunks too. The large particles in scratch feed or coarse cracked corn are particularly relished by the larger wild birds and animals. Fine cracked corn is excellent for blending with other wild bird seeds or with sunflower seeds. Hands down, sunflower seeds will attract the broadest variety of birds. We carry black oil seed in 20 lb. and 40 lb. bags, as well as grey striped in 25 lb. and 50 lb. bags (smaller bags available). We also stock wild bird favorites such as sunflower chips, nyjer seed (finches love it), peanuts, and much more. For feeding variety, also try placing high-energy suet or flavored suets near your feeders.
Summer Feeding
If you use good practices and remain cautious of bears and other predators, you can enjoy feeding wild birds throughout the summer months as well. In addition to the regular year-round species, you will see at close range many birds which are summer residents only. Summer feeding will not cause the birds to neglect their normal insect diet. Their strong natural instinct is to catch insects in abundance, especially to feed the nestlings. A bird bath filled with fresh, clean water is a must. Locate it near shrubbery or evergreens where the birds can dry and preen themselves in a protective environment.
