Hurricane Florence: Our Cause for Paws needs your help.

We can't always understand why bad things happen, but we can always strive to make a difference in peoples' lives. In the wake of Hurricane Florence, we all watch with heavy hearts as the lives of so many are devastated. In these tragic cases, and when families are forced to leave quickly, so many pets and animals are often left behind to fend for themselves. And while we worry about those displaced people, it's easy to overlook the lives of their four-legged companions.

The West Lebanon Feed & Supply "Cause for Paws" initiative, which began in response to these concerns after Hurricane Katrina in 2005, will provide much-needed resources to support local shelters and the "boots on the ground" helping to care for those displaced and desperate animals. The need is tremendous! We're currently working with the Brandywine Valley SPCA to assist with their critical transportation HUB, an opportunity to relocate already sheltered pets from high-need areas to shelters beyond the affected regions. Reducing populations of pets that are in the local shelters will provide opportunities for resources to go to new rescues, and increases the likelihood that displaced pets can stay close to home, with the hope of being reunited with their families. The unfortunate reality is that, as the small shelters in those devastated areas get backlogged with displaced pets, there is pressure for them to deal with the situation by euthanizing many of the animals. The work of the BVSPCA is so important because it provides relief not just for the animals, but for those shelters who could otherwise be forced to reduce their pet populations through these awful methods.
